Investor Overview ยท 2026
The reading app that
Goodreads never became.
Wellread is a pre-launch iOS app combining in-app reading of 61,000+ public domain books, Duolingo-style habit mechanics, AI-powered book discussion, and structured reading communities. We are building the product that captures the $1.1B reading app market that Goodreads โ stagnant since Amazon's acquisition in 2013 โ has left wide open.

The opportunity
A $1.1B market with a broken product at its center.
Goodreads has not shipped a meaningful product update in five years. The app is a reading tracker with a bad UI, owned by Amazon, widely mocked, and almost universally described as "the app I use because there's nothing better." That is the market signal.
๐
The problem
23% of Americans read zero books last year. Apps exist to track reading, but none are built to actually build the habit. Goodreads has no streaks, no gamification, no in-app reading, and no community features worth using in 2026.
๐ก
Our insight
Duolingo proved that habit mechanics transform passive interest into daily behavior. The same psychology applies to reading โ daily check-ins, streaks, XP, and social accountability are exactly what lapsed readers need. Nobody has applied this to books at scale.
The product
Six things that set Wellread apart.
1
61,000+ books readable in-app, for freeFull text of every public domain title via Project Gutenberg โ no subscription, no library card, no friction. No competitor offers in-app reading at any price. This is a hard structural moat: the catalog is already live, and it costs nothing to maintain.
2
Duolingo-style habit layerDaily reading check-ins, streaks, XP, badges, annual goals, leaderboards. The mechanics are identical to what drove Duolingo to a $5B market cap โ applied to the oldest cognitive habit-builder there is. This is not a feature; it is the core retention engine.
3
AI book discussion, in-appEvery book has a Claude-powered chat interface with conversation history persisted per book. Ask about themes, characters, historical context, theological dimensions. This deepens engagement in a way no competitor has shipped. It is live and working today.
4
Structured reading circlesNot groups โ curated reading programs with AI-generated discussion questions, group progress tracking, simultaneous hot-take reveals, and leaderboards. The LLF Reading Circle (James Likoudis's complete ecumenical canon) is the first live example. This format is defensible and expandable.
5
Learning algorithm that improves with useEvery swipe (right = Interested, left = Pass) trains a reader profile. After five books, Claude generates personalized recommendations from the profile. The product becomes meaningfully more valuable the more you use it โ the key driver of long-term retention in every top consumer app.
6
Author portal with analyticsAuthors register books, run sponsored placements, and track the full impression-to-purchase funnel. Revenue is B2B (invoiced outside the app) so Apple's 15โ30% IAP fee never touches it. This is a distribution channel for publishers that no reading app has built.

Revenue model
Three streams. None requiring Apple's cut.
Wellread's revenue architecture is deliberately structured to route primary revenue streams outside Apple's In-App Purchase system. Physical book commerce goes through affiliate links; author advertising is B2B invoiced. This preserves margin at a structurally significant level from day one.

Commission on every physical book purchase via Wellread affiliate links. Every book card in the app has a direct buy link. |

The Likoudis Legacy
Wellread extends the publishing and formation mission of James Likoudis (1928โ2024) โ theologian, apologist, and author of seven books on Catholic-Orthodox ecumenism. His corpus forms the LLF Reading Circle's foundational reading program, and his network of scholars, clergy, and lay readers represents Wellread's natural early adopter base.
